18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM

Image quality until now found only in a fixed focal length lens. The definitive large-aperture APS-C format standard zoom lens

What makes a standard lens ideal for you? Certain important qualities are required, such as fast maximum aperture, versatility for snap shots, portraiture and indoor photography plus a good combination of a wide range of focal lengths in a compact design. SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM is the first zoom lens ever to achieve a maximum aperture of f1.8 throughout the zoom range. It is a wide aperture, standard zoom-lens for digital single lens reflex camera’s with APS-C size sensor’s. *1The lens has a focal range equivalent to 27mm – 52.5mm in a 35mm format and it can cover the angles of view of multiple fixed focal length lenses. This wide aperture, standard zoom lens enables the photographer to expand creative possibilities on any occasion.

Our Art line delivers high-level artistic quality

Sigma is organizing all its interchangeable lenses into three product lines; Contemporary, Art and Sports. Designed with a focus on sophisticated optical performance and abundant expressive power, our Art line delivers high-level artistic expression. Developed with the maximum emphasis on artistic touch, they are designed to meet the expectations of users who value a creative, dramatic outcome above compactness and multifunction. Along with landscapes, portraits, still-life, close-up and casual snaps, they are perfect for the kind of photography that unleashes the inner artist. Ideal for studio photography, they offer just as much expressive scope when capturing architecture, starry skies, underwater shots and many other scenes.

Excellent Usability

A zoom lens is very convenient as it offers various angles of view just by rotating the zoom ring. However, the down side was that no zoom lens ever offered a faster aperture than f2.8 which led photographers to select fixed focal length lenses for brighter images. While the aperture value of prime lenses is superior to zoom lenses, their field of view is always the same, and therefore it was always necessary to carry many fixed focal length lenses. SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM is a new generation lens that can deliver images at f1.8 aperture throughout its focal length. The bright viewfinder is very helpful for checking the focus and composition of the image. If it is compared with a lens of F2.8, the faster shutter speed and the shallow depth of field of F1.8 further expands creativity. From wide to standard range this lens offers the excellent versatility and performance of multiple fixed focal length lenses.

Fruit of cutting edge technology

To achieve a wide zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f1.8, various technical problems need to be overcome. As the aperture value gets larger, the depth of focus becomes shallower, thus it makes the lens design extremely complicated in order to compensate for various distortions, such as spherical, axial chromatic and astigmatic aberration along with curvature of field. In order to compensate for astigmatic aberration across the entire focal range, we have relied on the experience and know how gained when designing our super wide angle zoom lenses such as SIGMA12-24mm F4.5-5.6 II DG HSM and SIGMA 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM. In addition, the technological innovation at our Aizu factory also contributes to better lens production. It has enabled us to develop a wide glass-molded aspheric lens, and the incorporation of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass has optimized power distribution of the optical elements and compensated for various aberrations as well as curvature of field at the widest angle. Thanks to our knowledge of lens design accumulated over a long period of time plus the latest lens manufacturing techniques, SIGMA has finally made the dream of a zoom lens with F1.8 throughout its entire focal range come true.

Convenient handling

Convenient handling is achieved by incorporating internal focusing and zooming which prevents any change in the length of the lens when focusing and zooming. It is possible to use a specialist filter, such as a Circular Polarizer, as the front part of the lens does not rotate.

Designed to minimize flare and ghosting

Flare and ghosting were thoroughly measured and monitored from an early stage in the lenses development to establish an optical design which is resistant to strong incidental light such as backlight. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions. Attaching the matched petal type hood, which is supplied, will provide extra protection from flare and ghosting.

Minimum focusing distance of 28cm

With a minimum focusing distance of 28cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.3, this lens is excellent for close-up photography.

Hyper Sonic Motor

The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function. Optimizing AF algorithm, smoother AF is achieved. It also enables full-time manual focusing capability which allows sensible focus adjustment by simply rotating the focus ring.

Incorporating Rounded diaphragm

The 9 blade rounded diaphragm creates an attractive round bokeh at large-aperture settings.

Design concept

The new product lines incorporate rubber for the attachment part of the provided lens hood. For better usability, the designs of the lens cap and AF/MF changeover switch have been improved. In order to ensure high accuracy of the product, all metallic parts and the new compound material, TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), which has a high affinity to metal parts, are housed internally. On the lens barrel, the last three digits of its release year are engraved so the lens can be identified according to the year of its launch.

Brass made bayonet mount

This lens incorporates a brass made bayonet mount which has both high accuracy and durability. A special treatment to reinforce its strength is applied to the surface giving it greater strength and making it highly resistant to long-term use.

Newly developed “USB DOCK” exclusively for new product lines

Based on these new lines, we have developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus.

Evaluation with Sigma's own MTF measuring system “A1”

We used to measure lens performance with MTF measuring system using conventional sensors. However, we’ve now developed our own proprietary MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system (A1) using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of our quality control inspections. The SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM will all be checked using this “A1” before they are shipped.

In the news

In the field the biggest plus-points were the ability to take pictures in low-light conditions and the eye-catching nature of the close-range pictures that could be created…Unless something truly incredible is waiting around the corner, Sigma’s 18-35mm f/1.8 A-series lens will surely be the wide-angle zoom of the year for 2013′

‘Externally, the build is similar to the vaunted, full-frame, 35mm f/1.4 from the firm and is easily a match for the marques in build quality. Both focus and zoom rings are well damped and there’s a reasonably long through for precise manual focus. With such a wide aperture you might expect to see some chromatic aberration but it’s difficult to find. The result is still a big and heavy lens that focuses to a shorter-than-usual 28cm but one that excels in image quality.’

‘The lens is fitted with Sigma’s HSM sonic focussing technology which is virtually silent. The zoom is equally smooth. Both actions are internal because the lens never changes size when zoomed or focused….The performance was as good as you could expect from a lens of this range….It’s a true convergence product that can match the demands of the highest resolution SLRs, such as the Nikon D5300 I used in the test. And it’s designed to last for many years of further camera development. It comes highly recommended.’

‘Few lenses of any description can match this amazing standard of sharpness, including most primes, but here we also have that unique and very useful f/1.8 aperture, excellent AF and superb build quality too. And the price? Not the hefty well-into-four-figures you might expect, but just £650. Absolutely great lens.’

‘Considering that this Sigma lens offers nearly the same zoom range as the Canon EF-S 17-50mm, and matches it in having a constant f/2.8 aperture and image stabilisation, the Sigma is rather smaller and lighter in weight – and the stabiliser itself is slightly more effective than on the Canon, delivering a four-stop benefit. The main differences are that the Sigma comes complete with a lens hood – and more significantly it costs less than half as much to buy.’

‘Build quality is the best in test, with a fully internal zoom and focus system, so there are no external moving parts. There are also large, grippy focus and zoom rings, a part metal barrel, and a focus distance window.’

This lens opens new possibilities for owners of APS-C format cameras for low light shooting and creative use of depth of field with a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture, normally reserved for prime focal length lenses. The image quality delivered, especially at shorter focal lengths is of the level normally reserved for prime lenses also. The sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM | A lens has excellent sharpness and is reasonably priced.

In terms of aesthetics, the Sigma 18-35mm looks fantastic; its matte black paintwork teamed with silver and white detailing resembles that of a ‘Stealth fighter’ jet and it just oozes high build quality. Credit must be given to Sigma for taking the plunge and being the first to pull off this optical feat. So, if you’re in the market for a well-built zoom that offers impressive image quality and great control for shallow depth-of-field effects, it’s a great choice.

The new design, with its large, easy-to-use focus and zoom rings, looks as good as it is to use.

Overall, the Sigma lens is built to an extremely high standard. Just a quick glance at the resolution charts of the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC reveals that it is a great lens. The lens coating and contrast mean that the performance is excellent and the lens has a lovely smooth out-of-focus bokeh. Overall, the image quality of the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM lens is excellent, especially when you consider that it is a world first.

Even at the price of the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM is attractive, significantly undercutting the purchase of several equivalent prime lenses, whilst offering excellent image quality and the convenience of a zoom. If you don’t mind losing the longer focal lengths of the typical standard zoom lens, then the new Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM is an essential purchase for APS-C DSLR owners.
