All Sigma cameras and lenses are designed, manufactured and assembled at our sole factory at Aizu in Japan. We believe that having full control over the whole production process is essential for creating innovative, carefully thought-out and impeccably-constructed products.
All of our equipment is built using the best possible materials, which are made by us in Japan with industry-leading engineering technology.
Perhaps the defining characteristic of Sigma equipment is our attention to detail and outstanding craftsmanship in everything we do.
SIGMA has built a reputation as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of high-performance optics for both cine and stills. The consistently exceptional optical quality of SIGMA lenses has made them the first choice of many leading professional photographers and film-makers.
Kazuto Yamaki, CEO of Sigma
Sigma chose Aizu as its main production base in the early 1970s. The factory is situated in a rural area at the base of Mount Bandai in the Fukushima Prefecture, about four hours’ drive north of Tokyo. The areas has an abundance of very clean water from the mountain streams, which is essential for grinding and polishing lenses. Sigma’s founder, Michihiro Yakimi, was also drawn to this area for its workforce, who have a reputation for craftsmanship and attention to detail.
If you’re curious to see more of the place where your Sigma camera or lens is made, this short film will give you a taste of what this beautiful region of Japan is like. We hope you can see why we are so proud to use our ‘Made in Aizu, Japan’ tagline wherever we can.
Sigma was founded in 1961 by Michihiro Yamaki, who remained at the helm until he passed away in 2012. Mr Yamaki’s son, Kazuto Yamaki, took the reins, developing the company into the brand we know today. The ethos of Sigma is very much focused on giving photographers of all levels the best possible optics to capture life’s most important moments.
In 2012 SIGMA completely reimagined its lens line-up with its new Global Vision range, which consisted of the Art, Contemporary and Sports lines. Optically outstanding, beautifully built and with innovative design and features, the Global Vision range now comprises more than 50 primes and zooms. Ranging from 12-600mm they have become the optics of choice for many professional photographers and film-makers around the world. The SIGMA CINE line is based on the Art line of lenses.
SIGMA’s Art, Contemporary and Sports lines are designed to help photographers choose the right lens for the job. Art lenses tend to have very wide apertures, professional features and outstanding optical quality to deliver unrivalled expressive performance. Contemporary lenses also offer outstanding optical and build quality, but are much more portable. And Sports lenses are telephoto optics designed mainly for fast-action shooting.
In 2016 SIGMA launched a range of high-performance 8K-compatible CINE lenses aimed at higher-end productions. Sharp yet characterful, there are now more than 25 in the range. They have been used to shoot a number of high-end productions including Top Gun: Maverick and Will Smith’s Welcome to Earth.
In 2019 Sigma launched its first full-frame mirrorless camera, the fp. It was also the first Sigma camera to be fitted with a Bayer sensor. It was the smallest and lightest mirrorless camera ever built, and with its powerful sensor, wide range of advanced features for both stills and video, and its modular design, it’s one of the most innovative camera designs of the digital age. The fp has since been joined by the fp L, which boasts 61MP in a body that weighs only 427g.

In 2018 Sigma joined the L-Mount Alliance with Leica and Panasonic and, more recently, DJI, Blackmagic and Samyang, meaning our cameras and lenses are compatible with products from these manufacturers. Sigma’s growing line-up of L-Mount lenses can be used on our own fp Series cameras, any Leica camera, any Panasonic full-frame camera and some Blackmagic cameras.
In December 2019, a report by The Ethical Consumer (ethicalconsumer.org) investigated, scored and ranked the ethical and environmental record of 12 of the major camera brands. We’re proud to have come out top in this report. From our foundation in 1961, we have always put kindness to our planet right at the core of our corporate philosophy.
As we manufacture all our products in one factory in Japan, our production chain is geographically well-contained, and therefore our environmental footprint is relatively small. We are making active investment in facilities that reduce our environmental impact, and we are adopting production processes and technologies that avoid a cost-first mentality. Examples include the adoption of trivalent chromium, increased purification equipment and simplified packaging. We also work hard to preserve the beautiful natural environment around our head office and factory.Â
Throughout 2022 and 2023, we have worked with the Eden Reforestation Projects to plant a tree for every lens and camera sold by SIGMA UK. This helps to look after our planet, creates new habitats, reduces soil erosion and provides employment to impoverished communities around the world. Thank you for supporting this initiative.
