£2779Capture wildlife, aircraft and sports in incredible detail with the all-new SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports, designed exclusively for full-frame mirrorless cameras. This compact and lightweight lens features SIGMA’s high-speed HLA motor and OS2 algorithm, delivering fast and precise autofocus with 5 stops of effective stabilisation. The use of special exclusive low-dispersion glass elements and precision engineered TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) materials reduce the lens’ overall size to 234.6mm and weight to 1,370g*, making it significantly smaller and lighter than the previous SIGMA 500mm F4 DG OS HSM | Sports for DSLRs.
As well as being optically outstanding, the lens features a range of professional features, including a weather-resistant structure for superior protection in tough shooting conditions, a Focus Limiter switch, a de-clickable and lockable aperture ring, a detachable tripod socket and a Custom Mode switch. This extensive feature-set, exceptionally portable build and superb optical performance make the SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports for L-Mount and Sony E-mount systems the definitive ultra-telephoto prime for both enthusiasts and professionals.
*L-Mount specification
Take control of the depth-of-field using the built-in aperture control ring. The ring can be de-clicked, which is useful for film-makers, and locked so that it cannot be changed accidentally.
An Arca-Swiss-compatible magnesium alloy tripod socket is included to keep the lens compact and lightweight. The socket features a standard 1/4” screw and can be detached when required, especially useful when shooting hand-held.
Much of the exterior and some of the interior of the lens is built of TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), a light and strong material that increases durability and reduces weight. TSC has similar thermal expansion properties to aluminium, which means that both the TSC and aluminium parts within the barrel expand and contract to the same degree as temperatures change. This ensures a highly consistent performance whether shooting in a hot desert region or the freezing temperatures of a polar environment.
The mount connection, manual focus ring, zoom ring, switches, switch panel and exterior connection are all dust- and splash-resistant to prevent dust and moisture from entering the lens. The front element of the lens has a water- and oil-repellent coating that helps keep the optic clear of contaminants.

The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports is perfectly suited to fast-paced action such as birds in flights or high-performance cars on a race circuit. Its HLA motor delivers extremely fast, accurate and near-silent AF that far outperforms traditional stepping motors. Low-light environments such as concerts and floodlit pitches are no trouble thanks to the exclusive OS2 algorithm, providing an effective 5 stops* of stabilisation.
*Based on CIPA guidelines (Measured at 500mm with a 35mm full-frame image sensor).
AF/MF switch
For changing between auto and manual focus. Includes Manual Focus Override function.
Focus Limiter switch
For limiting the lens' focusing range.
Two-mode Optical Stabiliser
For shake-free hand-held shots.
Custom Mode switch
For a more customised lens set-up.
The lens is equipped with an AF/MF switch and a Focus Limiter switch that shortens the focus driving range. This stops the lens incorrectly focusing on objects either in front or behind the subject, speeding up focus acquisition.
The 500mm also features two OS modes. Mode 1 can be used for all types of photography to help reduce unwanted camera shake at slower shutter speeds. Mode 2 employs SIGMA’s intelligent OS algorithm for smoother panning shots – ideal for tracking a fast-paced object as it moves. Regardless of the orientation of the lens, the stabilisation is effective for both vertical and diagonal movement and doesn’t interfere with the panning motion.
By default, the Custom Mode switch can be used to change how the stabilisation is viewed through the viewfinder, whilst L-Mount users can customise the switch further by using a SIGMA UD-11 USB Dock. The dock can also be used to change how the OS operation works or fine-tune the Focus Limiter range.
The three AFL buttons* found around the lens barrel can be set to a preferred camera function for easier handling.
*Only on compatible cameras. Available functions may vary depending on the camera used.
To reduce the size of the lens without compromising optical quality, the lens uses convex low-dispersion elements towards the front of the lens barrel. The design of these glass elements also keeps chromatic and axial aberrations to a minimum. Flare and ghosting are prevented by refractive lenses, ideal for when shooting in backlit environments such as sporting arenas or when strong light sources are in or close to being in frame.
When compared to the SIGMA 500mm F4 DG OS HSM | Sports for DSLRs, the lens is impressively small and lightweight, all achieved without using conventional diffractive optical elements.
The SIGMA 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS | Sports is ideal for professionals looking for compact lenses without compromising on image quality. Its compact size makes the lens suitable for a wide variety of photography applications and is ideal where weight limits may be an issue. Photographers looking for extra versatility can consider the SIGMA 60-600mm F4.5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports. Its 10x telephoto zoom makes it easier to compose images but its weight increases.

SIGMA has two teleconverters that are compatible with the L-Mount version of the lens. The TC-1411 1.4x converter (produces 700mm) and the TC-2001 2x converter (produces 1000mm). Both converters work with full AF.
All Sigma cameras and lenses are designed, manufactured and assembled at our sole factory at Aizu in Japan. This domestic production model is unusual in today’s industry, with most imaging companies opting to outsource to other countries to reduce costs. But SIGMA believes that keeping virtually all manufacturing, processing and assembly in Aizu is essential for creating innovative, carefully thought-out and impeccably constructed products that meet the high standards demanded by professional photographers and film-makers around the world.
Sigma chose Aizu as its main production base in the early 1970s. Situated at the base of Mount Bandai in the Fukushima Prefecture, about four hours’ drive north of Tokyo, Aizu has an abundance of very clean water from mountain streams, which is essential for grinding and polishing lenses. Sigma’s founder, Michihiro Yamaki, was also drawn to this area for its workforce, who have a reputation for their craftsmanship, work ethic and attention to detail. Mr Yamaki’s son, Kazuto Yamaki, now the owner and CEO of SIGMA Corporation, has the same unwavering commitment to keeping production in Japan.
Today Sigma’s factory is more than 50,000 square feet in size, and packed full of some of the most advanced optical manufacturing technology in existence. So when you buy a Sigma camera or lens you can be sure that virtually every single component part has been manufactured and assembled by SIGMA, in Japan, with the greatest level of care and attention. We hope you enjoy using our products.

A special coating applied to the front element to help repel water and oil.
Mounting a camera with a heavy lens on a tripod puts huge strain on the camera’s tripod thread. To get around this some telephoto lenses have a tripod socket so that the camera and lens attach to the tripod at or close to their centre of gravity. This ensures a more balanced set-up.
This suppresses flare and ghosting by minimising reflections within the lens, ensuring punchy, high-contrast results. All lenses in the current Sigma range feature this technology.
Sigma’s Optical Stabilizer function uses sensors inside the lens to detect motion, then moves specific lens elements in order to effectively minimise blur. This helps ensure shake-free images at slower shutter speeds.
Internal focus or an inner focus system means the lens configuration uses movable internal lens elements that adjust focus without changing the length of the lens barrel. This helps keep the centre of gravity of the lens more constant when changing focus.
The lens has an image circle large enough to be used on a full-frame camera. It can also be used on cameras with a smaller ‘crop’ sensor, provided the mount is compatible.
This switch, found on some Sigma telephoto lenses, allows users to limit the focusing range to either near distance or far distance. This helps speed up AF, and also ensures the camera won’t attempt to focus on an unwanted area of the frame.
The lens has a filter thread around the front element onto which filters and filter holders can be attached.
This switch is found on selected Sigma lenses. On L-Mount versions it is possible to customise the OS and focus limiter distance and assign these to C1 or C2. On Sony E-mount C1 and C2 are pre-assigned to control the OS effect.
The mount is the part of the lens that attaches to the camera body. A coated brass mount is used for strength, and is surrounded by a rubber seal to keep out dust and moisture.
Found on the barrel of some Sigma lenses, the AFL button can be assigned to various functions to widen the range of operations available on the lens (available functions depend on the camera model).
This switch toggles between autofocus and manual focus.
The diaphragm is constructed of nine rounded blades for a circular aperture opening and round out-of-focus highlights.
