Over the past thirty two years photographer Nigel Waller has specialised in vehicle photography, working for a wide client base including Foden, DAF and Isuzu, he travels the length and breadth of the UK supplying shots for advertising and commercial clients. In this article Nigel shares why he chooses to go the “Foveon Way”.

In 2010 I went to Scotland with my Gandolfi 5” x 4” camera and lenses, plus a SIGMA DP1. The Sigma camera was to be used just as a visual notebook. On my return I had a very pleasant surprise. I preferred the Sigma images to those produced with the large format camera. This changed the way I produced my landscape and seascape images.

After purchasing a SIGMA DP1 Merrill I found the larger sensor a big step up in quality, more detail, better colour rendition, but still retaining an individual look. I could now produce images that enabled me to match medium format with a camera that fits in my pocket.

The biggest change came with the SIGMA sd Quattro used with the SIGMA 18-35 F1.8 DC HSM | Art and the SIGMA 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art lenses. Beautiful smooth colours, a wide tonal range in monochrome mode and superb detail. A solidly built camera with a very good menu layout and superb lenses.

Sigma Imaging UK let me test the SIGMA sd Quattro H with the SIGMA 35mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art lens. The APS-H Foveon X3 Quattro direct image sensor produces stunning images. The Sigma system is now used to produce images for my automotive clients, it can compete with anything on the market.
