Zoom lenses provide photographers with the power of storytelling. The power of the zoom along with your shooting distance from the subject can help to create different images. SIGMA’s newest all in-one lens package; the SIGMA 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM | Contemporary lens offers a high ratio zoom in a compact design. It benefits from advanced optical and mechanical features making it the ideal choice for photographers looking to travel light. We’ll show you how this versatile zoom lens can give you the power of storytelling by creating three different images from the same scene.

Photographing at the widest focal length setting helps to put emphasis on the subject in the foreground and allows the photographer to choose what they want as the most prominent feature. Setting the focal length at a wide setting and moving closer to the subject allows the photographer to control the viewers’ attention to what you want them to see. In the above image Paul used the lens at 18mm along with the additional Close-Up lens, especially designed for the Sigma 18-300mm Contemporary lens. By doing this he created the toy car to be the prominent feature and, of course, the background buildings appear far away from the subject but they still have some clarity. The building furthest in the background, just behind the toy car, looks smaller in size than the car itself.

Changing the focal length of the SIGMA 18-300mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM | Contemporary lens to a standard focal length or somewhere positioned within the middle of the zoom range, puts further emphasis on the subject, but this time by using a shallow depth of field. This mid telephoto range is the one used most often for portraits to call attention to the facial features and not the background. In this image Paul used a 50mm focal length plus the AML72-01 Close Up lens and the subject becomes more prominent in the foreground with the background building appearing closer and of equal size to the toy car. Using the lens at the standard focal length also provides a more realistic view.

Increasing to a longer focal length brings the subject closer to you and the closer the objects in the photo will appear in relation to each other. A longer focal length is normally used for wildlife photography as the photographer is usually some distance away from the subject. In this image Paul zooms the focal length to 300mm while stepping backwards to frame the subject to the foreground. You’ll notice the striking difference in the background buildings have now increased in size, appearing larger than the car but the creative blur decreases their importance.

The Sigma 18-300mm Contemporary lens is an excellent tool to use when you want to tell a story and it provides the photographer with the ability to ask themselves “What story do I want to tell with this picture?” You can create some interesting perspectives when you think about the focal length to use when capturing the image but it shouldn’t just be the zoom controls that should be used to frame your subject but your feet as well!
