Abul Shah of Gracious Photography describes his style as natural, candid and romantic. He believes creating beautiful images is both a responsibility and an art, because his goal is to create a legacy. We asked Abul to test the new SIGMA 105mm F.4 DG HSM | Art lens and see how it fits into his creative workflow.

Art
noun: art; plural noun: arts; plural noun: the arts
1. The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.
Is photography an art? This is the age-old question and debate.
Essentially, art is a work(s) created by whatever the artist is drawn to and chooses to see, and show. Is this any different from the creative photographer?

The creative photographer will go beyond the mere photographing or documenting of what they choose to see, or not see. For them, the expression of emotion through creative compositional techniques and ideas drives everything they do, and it’s evident in every image.
Photography, for me personally, is an art. Evoking emotion in the viewer of my work is my ultimate goal. I want to captivate them, even if just for a moment. Whether it’s the expression of joy, sadness, mystery, or love, creating imagery that allows the photographer’s raw creativity to reign above all else; that is truly an art.
I recently used the Sigma 105 1.4 DG HSM Art lens for the first time, and something unique happened; I could feel it pushing me creatively.

First came a moment of shock, then came countless moments of inspired creativity. What can I say? the sharpness, the focus accuracy, and the quality of this lens is just incredible.
The 105 Art lens is not just a tool for me, it has given me inspiration, pushed me past my comfort zone, and it’s become invaluable to me as a photographer.

I’m excited about the infinite possibilities this lens has given me for pushing the creative boundaries of my work, and exploring those possibilities is what nourishes my creative soul.

So in answer to the opening question, yes, photography is an art, and this lens is a tool for an artist.
